The New England Patriots are hiring former UNH standout Matt Evans as an area scout. Evans previously served as a scout for eight seasons with the Washington football team.

Evans is going to focus on the Southeast region, which could be important for New England’s future drafts. New England has drafted from the SEC in recent years, as 10 of their top-60 draft picks have come from that conference. In addition to just the SEC, Clemson and North Carolina have also become football hotbeds in recent years. The Southeast region could prove to be very crucial for New England’s future.

Evans certainly has a football background. He played at UNH, and was a four-year starter. He garnered accolades for his performance, winning the National Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2011. He managed to make minicamp with New England in 2014, but he was not brought back for training camp that year.

As New England looks to continue building for the future, Evans could play a crucial role in shaping it.
