The only QB to join Tom Brady over the last decade and a half in suiting up for more than 70 games for the Patriots will soon be walking out the door.

The Patriots have informed veteran QB Brian Hoyer they intend to release him before the start of NFL free agency, according to multiple reports.

Debuting with the Patriots as an undrafted rookie in 2009, Hoyer has been a frequent, if intermittent, presence in New England’s locker room.

Hoyer was in the midst of his third stint in New England after departing as a free agent in 2015 and 2019.

Hoyer appeared in one NFL game last season, an abbreviated start against the Green Bay Packers after starting QB Mac Jones suffered a high-ankle sprain the week before. Hoyer left the game during the Patriots’ second offensive possession after suffering a concussion.

Hoyer remained on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Because of the NFL’s Top 51 rule, a qualifier that makes it so that only the team’s Top 51-highest paid players count against the salary cap through training camp and preseason, Hoyer’s release will cause a slight cap crunch.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
