Patrols increase in south King County to monitor pedestrian, bicyclist safety

Law enforcement agencies in south King County are conducting enforcement patrols to make it safer for walkers and bicyclists.

The patrols along the south State Route 99 corridor through Federal Way, Kent, Des Moines, SeaTac and Tukwila are happening now through Apr. 29.

During the increased patrols, police will monitor driver behavior toward the vulnerable road users.

The King County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force said that recently, crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists have been increasing.

“These incidents are completely preventable, and we are asking everyone to watch out for one another and help us reach our vision of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030,” said Des Moines Police Department Sgt. Scott Oak.

In the coming months, educational information in multiple languages will be provided through community outreach.

The task force is also working with local engineers and cities on possible road safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists.

“Our roads are safer when drivers remain aware of pedestrians and bicycles/rollers, and we look out for one another,” said Sara Wood with the King County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force. “Watching out for pedestrians and bicycles/rollers in crosswalks, along the road, and near transit centers/stops is important to keep us all safe.”

This is the second year patrols have been increased along this route to monitor driver behavior toward bicyclists and walkers.
