New pavement in East Milton Square to be torn up, overnight roadwork begins again

MILTON – Work to replace the defective asphalt in East Milton Square will begin Sunday night, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced.

The work is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting. Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays, to travel at reduced speeds and should use caution throughout the duration of the work.

Chase Berkeley, the town's director of public works, told the select board last week that the top layer of pavement recently laid down by contractors working for the state was defective and needs to be removed and replaced.

The pavement will be removed on Sunday and Monday nights, the MassDOT said. The new final layer of pavement will be laid down on the nights of Aug. 23 and 24.

The last task will be the installation of pavement markings.  That work is scheduled for the nights of Aug. 25, 29, 30 and 31.

The work area includes portions of Adams Street, Granite Avenue, Bryant Avenue and Boulevard Street.

The East Milton Square project included the installation of new traffic lights and an updated control system, as well as new and refurbished street lights.  It also included repairs to the deck above the Southeast Expressway and the restoration of M. Joseph Manning Park atop it. The work on the park is scheduled to be done this fall.

The town is planning to build a a 38-foot-by-20-foot pavilion in the park that will serve as a stage for town events, a space for small gatherings and a seating area.
