BREMERTON — A fresh layer of asphalt was installed on Sixth Street in downtown Bremerton Friday night, as crews took advantage of a rare January dry spell to complete a $2 million project.

Miles Resources of Puyallup, the project's general contractor, worked through the week to ready the street, from its intersection with Warren Avenue to Pacific Avenue. Delays to get supplies, including the ductile iron pipe to replace a century-old water main, pushed paving into January, according to Chris Dimmitt, the city's project manager.

The grant-funded work included building a new and safer intersection at Sixth and Park Avenue, one that includes better lighting. The old intersection relied on video detection to change the signal, the last light in the entire city that used the outdated technology.

"The new signal will have radar detection, pedestrian signal displays, and pedestrian push buttons," said Dimmitt, who added the work on installing those items should wrap up in the coming weeks.
