Pavingmachinebreakdowns slow I-95 traffic for miles in Fairfield and Bridgeport, officials say

Jul. 24—The contractor's paver broke down a little after midnight Monday, said Josh Morgan, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation. Crews were able to get a backup paver to continue working, but around 3:30 a.m., that machine "slid off a trailer," he said.

Morgan said the highway couldn't be fully reopened, because the delay left a 2-inch lip in the road where part of the surface had been milled away, and the other part had been paved.

"That's why they were able to open the lane this morning for rush hour," he added. "They got behind schedule because of some equipment issues."

Morgan said no injuries were reported.

State police reported a disabled vehicle in the area of Exit 24. Morgan confirmed that was the paver that slid off the trailer. A heavy wrecker had to be called to the scene to remove the machine, he said.
