GAYLORD — Everyone tends to feel better and a bit more loose when the weather’s great.

That of course goes for golfers, maybe perhaps more than anyone and that showed when the Gaylord boys’ golf team hosted their Big North Conference match Wednesday at Treetops in Gaylord, with a couple other teams outside the league also in attendance.

Playing the Tradition course, some of the lowest rounds of the season came for a number of programs, including Petoskey.

Traverse City Central shot a 284 to lead the way, Traverse City West was second with a 297, followed by Cadillac, 316; Petoskey, 316; Alpena, 316; Ogemaw Heights, 332; Gaylord, 346; and Cheboygan, 357.

The three-way tie of 316 went to Cadillac on top when it came down to the fifth golfer, with the Vikings’ fifth golfer edging Petoskey’s by an 85-86 round score.

Still, at fourth place overall, the score of 316 for Petoskey came as the lowest for a Northmen boys team since 2015 and the first time in that period that they’ve shot under 320.

“Just an excellent showing by the guys,” Petoskey coach Chad Loe said. “Battling the heat and staying consistent, making putts, they just did a great job today.”

From an individual standpoint, Traverse City Central’s Shea Harmeson led with a 69, while Tyler Frechette of TC West shot a 70 and a three-way tie then followed.

Kole Putnam of Gaylord, Steven Grourlay of West and Michael Beattie of Central all carded 71 to tie for third.

While he was just outside the top 10 for the day, Petoskey’s Jackson Jonker shot a personal best round to lead for the Northmen, carding a 75.

A pair of sophomore golfers then followed for Petoskey in Max Faulkner and Andrew Licata, who carded 79 and 80, respectively.

“There’s definitely a bright future for Max and Andrew,” added Loe. “Those are two great scores for them.”

Parker Streiff also shot 82, Collin Caporosso finished with an 86 and Zach Reid shot a personal best of 88.

For Gaylord along with Putnam, Bryce Harding finished with an 87, Luke Somerville shot 89; Alex Cook, 99; Aidan Carr, 102; and Gage Caverson, 102.

Cheboygan’s day was led by Scott Pavwoski just below 80 with a 78, Max Hart carded an 89; Blaine Baldwin, 94; Luke Karsten, 96; Zach VanFleet, 100; and Connor Gibbons, 106.

Next up for the majority of teams in attendance will be a trip to Alpena on Friday, May 13, where they’ll play the Alpena city course.

Regional matches are still a few weeks out, scheduled for May 31.
