‘Paw’ty in the French Quater with Mystic Krewe of Barkus

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It’s always a “paw”ty when the Mystic Krewe of Barkus takes to the streets of New Orleans.

The four-legged krewe has been trotting since 1993 and made its 2024 Mardi Gras debut on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.

It’s a parade like no other, from one bark to another. Pet owners and their furry friends made their way to the Barkus Parade for a day of fun.

“New Orleans is a great city for dogs, a lot of places are pet friendly. So, it’s amazing and unique that there is even a krewe for dogs,” said pet owner Miles.

“She loves coming here. She loves all the free treats. She does not like walking She always sleeps in the car ride home, I can tell you that, but she loves it,” said pet owner Mikayla.

The costumes were a sight to see, as one dog owner tells WGNO it’s her dog’s favorite part.

“This one actually likes to put on costumes. She loves to get dressed up. She was excited this morning to finally wear her headpiece. She tried everything on before, but this is her first time wearing the whole thing,” said pet owner Cheryl.

While it’s a great time for the entire family, many are grateful that proceeds for the parade will benefit animal organizations in New Orleans and the Gulf South area. One owner tells WGNO that one of her proudest moments was rescuing her dog.

“Yeah, because he is such a great dog. He is so kind. He also likes to play with all the other dogs, which is why he enjoys being out here so much. He likes to meet all the other dogs,” said pet owner Laura.

This year’s parade was led by King Barkus 2024 Bentley Burton Jurgens, a tri–English Bulldog; Queen Barkus 2024 Bea Broussard, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; and Celebrity Grand Marshal Pippa the 3-legged Dog, a mixed breed.

Other 2024 Barkus royalty includes Grand Duke Gumbeaux Pittman, Grand Duchess Truffles Bush, Princess Royale Innocence Alexander, Duke Cooper Carringer, Duke Memo “Mozart” Mackey, Duke Nizi Tringali, Duchess Ti-Henna Hall, Duchess Apple Skaggs, Duchess Velvet Turoff, Duchess Sunny Babin, Duchess Peppi Zullo, Duchess My’iah Terrebonne, Duchess Molly Murphy and Duchess Zoe Konard.
