Pawcatuck ice cream shop to raise funds for breast cancer research

Apr. 18—STONINGTON — Mel's Downtown Creamery in Pawcatuck will donate 100% of its sales from its Classic Specialty Sundae from May 5 to 11 to Bakes for Breast Cancer Connecticut.

Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Through dessert-oriented events in various states, it has raised more than $2 million since 1999.

Bakeries, cafes, pastry shops and restaurants throughout Connecticut will participate in this year's fundraiser for the first time. The funds will support the research of Dr. Veda Giri of Yale School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center and Dr. Rachel Freedman of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

"We are on a mission to end breast cancer for good, one sweet treat at a time," said Bakes for Breast Cancer Founder Carol Sneider. "We continue to expand into different states and regions, and we felt that Connecticut was the next best location to join our other signature events in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and the Cape & Islands of Massachusetts as well. There's a robust culinary scene there, and we hope to welcome some of those venues that pride themselves on their desserts to join our mission this year and for years to come."
