Pay-what-you-can dog and cat sterilizations offered at Animal Rescue League

Sep. 23—The Animal Rescue League of Berks County in Cumru Township is offering pay-what-you-can spay and neuter surgeries for up to 100 dogs and owned cats.

The sterilization surgeries, which also include rabies vaccines, microchips and pain medications, are being underwritten by Tina Saracino's State Farm insurance agency in Exeter Township.

"Spaying and neutering your pet is an important component of their health," said Dr. Jason Banning, Medical Director at ARL, in a statement released Thursday. "Spaying can prevent many life-threatening diseases, such as pyometra — a serious infection of the uterus — and if done at a young age can also prevent serious mammary cancer later in life. Neutering can prevent or reduce many detrimental or dangerous behaviors, such as aggression and roaming, which puts them at greater risk of being struck by a car."

Appointments are open now and can be scheduled by emailing medical@berksarl.org or calling 610-373-8830, ext.640. The first 100 appointments scheduled will be pay-what-you-can. The surgeries are performed at the shelter's clinic at 58 Kennel Road.

The ARL offers a separate program called Operation CatSnip for unowned feral or community cats where the felines are trapped and brought to the ARL by those registering for the service, then sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, ear-tipped and returned to the area they were trapped.

Registration for that program is online at /www.berksarl.org/operation-catsnip or by calling 610-373-8830.
