Ohio State football final score: Michigan 45, OSU 23

Ohio State comes up short against Michigan for the first time since 2000, recording its first loss of the 2022 season.

The Wolverines will advance to the Big Ten championship as the Big Ten East champions.

Michigan's 22-point win is its largest against Ohio State since 1992.

Michigan RB Donovan Edwards scores second TD in fourth quarter | Score: Michigan 45, Ohio State 23

Ohio State's defense can't seem to stop Michigan RB Donovan Edwards in the fourth quarter.

After a 75-yard touchdown earlies in the fourth quarter, the Michigan sophomore running back took a carry 85 yards for Michigan's sixth touchdown of the day.

Michigan has 252 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries.

Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud intercepted in red zone

C.J. Stroud recorded the first turnover of the game at a costly point.

The Ohio State quarterback tried to flip the ball to wide receiver Xavier Johnson as he was flushed out of the pocket, but was intercepted by Michigan's Taylor Upshaw.

Michigan leads Ohio State 38-23 with 4:19 left in the game.

Michigan gets a 75-yard rushing touchdown from Donovan Edwards | Score: Michigan 38, Ohio State 23

Michigan scored another long touchdown, but this was a rushing TD as Donovan Edwards bounced outside and went 75 yards to the end zone.

Ohio State's Noah Ruggles makes a third field goal | Score: Michigan 31, Ohio State 23

OSU kicker Noah Ruggles was good from 27 yards out.

A costly penalty on OSU's defense leads to a Michigan touchdown | Score: Michigan 31, Ohio State 20

On third and 10 from the Ohio State 13, the Buckeyes had a chance to force a field goal, but a big penalty paved the way to more for the Wolverines.

J.J. McCarthy, facing pressure from multiple OSU players, lofted a desperation pass toward the back of the end zone. It sailed long ... right as Buckeyes defensive back Ronnie Hickman ran into Michigan's Ronnie Bell. The resulting pass interference call put the ball at the 2-yard line.

On the next third down, McCarthy scored his fourth touchdown of the day, the first of the rushing variety.

Ohio State's Gee Scott takes costly penalty

OSU had its best field position of the day, taking over at the Michigan 48, but after a play where OSU took a holding penalty Gee Scott got into it with one of the Wolverines. And because it happened after the play was over, it was also enforced. Later in that possession, OSU was called for an illegal snap. Almost needless to say, Ohio State ended the drive with a punt, a disgruntled C.J. Stroud lingering on the field while coach Ryan Day sent out his specialists.

UM quarterback J.J. McCarthy throws another long TD pass | Score: Michigan 24, Ohio State 20

Michigan has their second lead of the day thanks to a third long TD pass by J.J. McCarthy. The first two went to Cornelius Johnson, but the latest score, a 45-yarder, went to Colston Loveland. As with the Wolverines' last trip to the end zone, the closest Buckeye in the area was Cam Martinez.

McCarthy's totals after the first drive of the second quarter: He is 10 of 17 for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

Ohio State and Michigan, like clockwork

Neither OSU nor Michigan have pieced together a long, slow drive lately. None of the Wolverines' last six possessions have lasted even two minutes. The same is true of the Buckeyes' last five drives, but one of those ended with the expiration of the first half.

OSU's C.J. Stroud connects with Marvin Harrison for long TD | Ohio State 20, Michigan 17

The Buckeyes have countered with a long touchdown of their own. C.J. Stroud found Marvin Harrison sprinting down the sideline, and with a pinpoint, 42-yard pass, Ohio State jumped back in front.

Stroud is 17-for-25 passing for 191 yards and two TDs.

Another big play for J.J. McCarthy | Score: Michigan 17, Ohio State 13

On their second consecutive possession, Michigan has utilized a long pass from J.J. McCarthy to Cornelius Johnson to score. On this series, Johnson simply sprinted past the Buckeyes' defense 70 yards into the end zone. Cam Martinez was the closest Ohio State player, and there were a few yards separating him and the Wolverines receiver.

Noah Ruggles matches his OSU-long | Score: Ohio State 13, Michigan 10

After two unsuccessful drives, one that resulted in OSU turning the ball over on downs, the other in a punt, the Buckeyes have retaken the lead. That's thanks to kicker Noah Ruggles, who matched the longest effort of his Ohio State career with a 47-yard field goal.

| UM ties Ohio State on J.J. McCarthy TD pass, Blake Corum sitting out | Score: Ohio State 10, Michigan 10

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, facing pressure, was able to escape and find Cornelius Johnson in front of Cameron Brown. Jack Sawyer came up short of making a diving tackle and Cornelius Johnson was able to sprint 69 yards for a touchdown.

It was a three-play 70-yard drive for UM.

And it's notable that it happened without running back Blake Corum. The Michigan running back played early, registering two carries for 6 yards, but appears to have since been sidelined by the knee injury that kept him out most of the second half against Illinois.

There are numerous recruits in attendance at Ohio Stadium this afternoon, including 2023 five-star safety Caleb Downs, who is technically an Alabama recruit, but whom the Buckeyes have been trying to flip.

OSU opened today's game by converting on its first four third-down attempts. They were stopped on their fifth try, leading to the Buckeyes turning to Noah Ruggles. The kicker made a 32-yard field goal to extend Ohio State's lead.

Wolverines kicker Jake Moody 26 for 31 on field goals this season | Score: Ohio State 7, Michigan 3

Ohio State's made a few big plays – Tommy Eichenberg broke up a pass, Cody Simon wrapped up J.J. McCarthy and resulting in an intentional grounding call – and OSU was able to hold the Wolverines to a 49-yard Jake Moody Field goal on Michigan's opening drive.

C.J. Stroud opens Michigan game with TD pass to Emeka Egbuka | Score: Ohio State 7, Michigan 0 10:02 Q1

It didn't take long for Ohio State to move the ball downfield against Michigan, helped by an 18-yard rush by Xavier Johnson and Chip Trayanum, who recorded four rushes for 23 yards.

And in the red zone, C.J. Stroud gave Ohio State its first touchdown of the day on a four-yard touchdown pass to Emeka Egbuka.

On its first drive of the day, Ohio State converted on all three third-down attempts, including the Egbuka touchdown pas.

Ohio State used three running backs in the first drive: Johnson, Miyan Williams, who is returning for his first game since the Indiana win, and Trayanum.

Brian Hartline is ready for Ohio State vs. Michigan

Brian Hartline's focus during Saturday's Skull Session was on what happened one season ago, looking back to the Buckeyes' 42-27 loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor: Ohio State's first loss against the Wolverines since 2011.

And for the past year, Hartline, Ohio State's wide receiver coach, said all he's heard is "talk" from Michigan.

"Three hundred and sixty five days since that God-forsaken day at the Team Up North," Hartline said. "For 365 days, we've heard them talk. For 365 days, I had to watch them attack our head coach, attack our quarterback and attack Buckeye nation.

"Instead of getting loud and trying to respond on social media, we got quiet. We circled a date on the calendar Nov. 26, 2022. And we went to work. And we knew what we did in the dark, what we do, what we did in the quiet will someday come to light. Today is that light."
