Payroll issues persist for Gaston County educators

Monday night’s school board meeting included another ominous update on payroll problems plaguing Gaston County Schools.

Gary Hoskins, the district’s assistant superintendent of finance, told school board members there are still 463 employees who have discrepancies in their paychecks.

The issues include incorrect deductions, overpayments, incorrect retirement contributions and more.

Last week, the North Carolina Association of Educators and two Gaston County teachers filed a lawsuit against the district for the continued issues.

District leaders say they plan to launch a new support system for teachers next month.

Hoskins said the last payroll two weeks ago went well, but he remains cautious.

“The stability of the system is still a concern of mine, so when we have a good pay run, I’m still not quite confident that that’s going to happen every single time,” he said.

When asked by board members, Hoskins was unable to give an idea if or when the payroll issues would be fully resolved.
