You probably already know that Pabst Blue Ribbon is finally releasing its 99 can pack beer in the US. Honestly, it's still thrilling! But you may not know that PBR is donating $9,999.99 to a local Texas food bank in honor of the original creators of the pack.

You might be thinking "why Texas?" and that's a very good question! I have an answer. PBR announced in a release that it would be donating to the Central Texas Food Bank because PBR didn't actually come up with the 99-pack themselves! The brand drew inspiration from Austin Beerworks, who actually had the original 99-pack of beer. Yes! There is more than one 99-pack!

“Ideas are hard and they don’t all stick,” said Matt Bruhn, general manager at Pabst Blue Ribbon. “The 99-pack was a chance for us to pay homage to a great idea, give the world more beer to enjoy responsibly over the holiday season and help a local community.”

It turns out Austin Beerworks wasn't so thrilled when PBR came out with the 99-pack in Canada in 2017.

"We didn’t think anyone would ever come up with a stupider idea than the 99-packs of Peacemaker Anytime Ale we released in 2014. But Pabst Blue Ribbon proved us wrong,” a post on its Facebook page read. “With all the resources in the world, the best they could come up with is a bad version of something that’s already been done. Without passion and creativity, all you end up with are watered down ideas (and beer).”

Hopefully with this donation and this acknowledgment, it's all water (and beer!) under the bridge from here on out. As a reminder, you can pick up the 99-pack of PBR in Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Florida, New York, South Carolina, Montana, Vermont, California, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, and Colorado. With luck, there will still be 99-packs of Austin Beerworks beer floating around Austin, too!
