PCM boys end skid with win over Greene County

Dec. 10—JEFFERSON — A double-double by Jacob Wendt helped the PCM boys basketball team overcome a slow start against Greene County on Thursday.

Two other Mustangs scored in double figures and PCM continued its recent dominance over the Rams during a 47-42 road win in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Greene County led 12-6 after one quarter, but a 13-3 second and a 14-6 third helped the Mustangs rally for the victory. The Rams outscored PCM 21-14 in the fourth, but their late rally fell short.

Wendt finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, Gavin Van Gorp collected 16 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists and August Stock tallied 10 points, eight boards and three steals.

Chase Wagaman registered five points and three rebounds, Kaleb DeVries dished out four assists and swiped two steals and Mark Bussan grabbed four rebounds.

The Mustangs didn't have the services of starting post player Grant Van Veen for this game.

PCM (2-3 overall, 1-2 in the HOIC) shot 42 percent from the floor despite hitting only 3-of-22 from 3-point range. The Mustangs were 6-of-12 from the free-throw line and committed 16 turnovers.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak, and PCM has now won nine of its last 10 games against the Rams (2-3, 1-2).

Saydel 64, PCM 59, overtime

DES MOINES — PCM overcame a slow start against Saydel, but struggled in overtime during a 64-59 road loss on Tuesday.

The Mustangs fell behind 18-7 in the first and were outscored 7-2 in the overtime session.

PCM rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit with a 19-16 advantage in the third and a 15-9 surplus in the fourth.

Saydel defeated PCM for the first time since at least February of 2013. The Mustangs are 20-1 against the Eagles during that span.

Van Veen scored a career-high 20 points and added seven boards and three assists, Van Gorp chipped in 18 points, three boards and two steals and Wendt registered six points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

DeVries collected eight points, eight assists and four rebounds, Wagaman tallied four points and four rebounds, Stock grabbed seven boards and Jack Jungling corralled three rebounds.

The Mustangs shot 36.4 percent from the floor, made 9-of-31 from 3 and connected on 10-of-12 from the line. PCM turned the ball over seven times and got out-rebounded 41-38.

Saydel (2-2, 1-1) got 29 points, five rebounds and three assists from Cade Boten. Shyne Lo added 13 points and Mason Hicks collected seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.

AJ Ollin added 10 points and eight boards and Trevor Goode grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 32 percent from the floor but made 14-of-33 from long range. They were 12-of-16 from the line and committed eight turnovers.

Pella Christian 67, PCM 39

PELLA — The Mustangs couldn't overcome a slow start, were just 1-of-13 from long range and committed 21 turnovers during a 67-39 non-conference road loss to Pella Christian on Monday.

PCM trailed 11-5 after one and was outscored 26-17 in the second quarter and 30-17 in the second half.

Van Gorp finished with 14 points, two rebounds and three steals. Van Veen added nine points, two rebounds, four steals and two blocks and Wendt chipped in seven points, three rebounds and two assists.

Bussan collected three points and two boards, Stock and DeVries both had three rebounds and two assists and Wagaman and Jungling each grabbed two rebounds.

PCM shot 32 percent from the floor and connected on 10-of-16 from the line.

Aiden Stoltz led Pella Christian with 11 points and five assists and Isaac Kacmarynski put in 11 points.

The Eagles (2-2) shot 45 percent from the floor, made 9-of-27 from 3-point range and hit 12-of-19 from the charity stripe. They also out-rebounded the Mustangs 36-22 and committed 21 turnovers.

Pella Christian has won five straight games in the series and 10 of the past 11.
