PCM girls move up 2A ranks in pair of hurdle events

May 1—CARLISLE — PCM's girls track and field team had a tough time scoring points against a mostly Class 3A and 4A field on Thursday during the Carlisle Girls Wildcat Classic.

But the events they did excel in are now in the top six of 2A.

Margo Chipps scored 12 of the team's 33 points after winning the 400-meter hurdles. She also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay to a runner-up finish.

The Mustangs finished 10th in the 14-team field.

Chipps' time in the 400 hurdles was clocked in a season-best 1 minute, 7.6 seconds, which ranks fourth in 2A.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Belle Hudnut, Kate McClellan, Chelsea Bird and Chipps finished in a season-best 1:10.28, which currently sits sixth in 2A.

The Mustangs had three other top-five finishes. Celeste Wagaman finished third in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

Paige Steenhoek finished fifth in the 1,500 with a personal-best time 5:28.5. Delaney Baird was fifth in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:13.25.

Ames won the team title with 105 points followed by Norwalk (95), ADM (84), Carlisle (78) and Bondurant-Farrar (73). The rest of the field included North Polk (72), Winterset (56), Mason City (43), Gilbert (38), PCM (33), Creston (30), Grinnell (14), Knoxville (8) and Nevada (8).
