PCM softball stays at .500 after split at Pella Christian tournament

Jun. 27—PELLA — PCM's softball team scored early and often against Belle Plaine at the Pella Christian tournament on Saturday.

The Mustangs jumped on the Lady Plainsmen for nine runs in the first two innings and won in a rout, 11-1, in five innings.

The victory helped PCM salvage a split on the day as the Mustangs also lost 8-5 to the host Eagles.

The loss to Pella Christian (12-16) opened the Mustangs' day. They out-hit the Eagles 6-4 but also had three errors.

Pella Christian got homers from Bailey Roose and Jarah Morgan and scored all eight runs in the first two innings. PCM (12-12) rallied with four runs in the fifth but the comeback fell short.

Sidney Shaver doubled, had two hits and scored two runs and Belle Hudnut, Riley Johannes, Lark Drake and Eliana Buswell all finished with one hit.

Johannes tripled and had three RBIs, Hudnut scored one run and walked once, Drake was hit by a pitch and Buswell scored one run. Joslin Briles walked once and Reese Palm scored one run.

Paige Steenhoek (9-5) took the loss in the circle after allowing six runs — four earned — on three hits with three walks, one hit batter and one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

Riley DeVore spun the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on one hit with four strikeouts and three walks.

DeVore (3-4) was the winning pitcher in the second game against Belle Plaine (12-14). She allowed one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Ella Schendel pitched the fifth inning and surrendered just one walk.

The Mustangs' bats were hot against Belle Plaine. They finished with 13 hits and did not commit an error.

Hudnut raised her batting average to .400 with three hits and also scored two runs.

Johannes had two triples, two runs and four RBIs. She's batting a team-best .414 with a team-high 28 RBIs this summer. She's also one double away from tying the school record but had three triples Saturday.

Shaver tallied two hits, two runs and one steal and was hit by two pitches. Briles doubled twice, scored one run and had one RBI and Steenhoek collected two hits and two RBIs.

Drake doubled, scored two runs, was hit by a pitch and had one RBI and one steal, RaeAnn Duinink had one hit, one run and two RBIs and Addyson Hegwood scored one run.
