May 16—STATE CENTER — Margo Chipps was impressive in a pair of individual wins at the Class 2A state qualifier hosted by West Marshall on Thursday.
But the rest of the top performances for the Mustangs mostly came in relays.
In the end, PCM's girls and boys track and field teams each qualified five entries for next week's state track meet at Drake Stadium.
Chipps led the way for the girls as she qualified in four events and highlighted the Mustangs fourth-place team finish.
PCM's girls scored 79 points in fourth. Van Meter won the meet with 143 points and the rest of the top five included Roland-Story (105), South Hamilton (91) and Pella Christian (60).
On the boys' side, PCM qualified four relays and Jacob Van Winkle will run on the blue oval in four events as he was an individual qualifier in the 200-meter dash.
The Mustangs were seventh as a team with 57.5 points. Van Meter won the meet with 105 points followed by Des Moines Christian (100), Pella Christian (94), Roland-Story (91.5) and South Hamilton (80).
PCM was led by a pair of seniors. Chipps won the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles and was part of the shuttle hurdle and 4x100 relays. Van Winkle secured at-large bid in the 200, will anchor the 4x200 relay and also is on the state-qualifying distance medley and 4x100 relay teams.
Chipps will have two top-10 times in 2A when she gets to the blue oval next week. She finished first in the 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 7.77 seconds and that time qualified sixth in 2A. The 100 hurdles time qualified 10th in 2A after she won the race with in 16.41.
The top two finishers in each event at each 2A site earned automatic bids to the state meet. The next best eight times and distances also secured at-large berths.
All five qualifying entries for PCM's girls were auto bids.
The Mustangs were winners of the shuttle hurdle relay in a season-best 1:09.72. That team includes Belle Hudnut, Kate McClellan, Chelsea Bird and Chipps. That time is the seventh best qualifying mark in 2A.
PCM was second in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, running season-best times in each event.
The 4x100 team included Bri Kalar, Delaney Baird, Ryan Bennett and Bird and they finished in 52.59. The 4x200 will feature Chipps, Baird, Bennett and Bird and they qualified with a time of 1:50.16.
The PCM boys were automatic qualifiers in the distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays.
The Mustangs won the distance medley relay in 3:43.93, which was a season-best time by 5 seconds. It also was the 10th best qualifying time in 2A. That foursome features Andrew Mitchell, Van Winkle, Landon Fenton and Beau Webb.
The shuttle hurdle relay team featuring Gatlin Boell, Gavin Fenton, Trey Broderson and Justin Maggard finished second in 1:05.54.
The 4x100 and 4x200 relays both were third, but PCM had times good enough for the top 17 in both events.
In the 4x100, Mitchell, Aidan Anderson,Van Winkle and Maggard finished in 44.92. The 4x200 relay team of Mitchell, Anderson, Maggard and Van Winkle completed the race in a season-best 1:33.58.
Van Winkle earned an at-large spot in the 200 after finishing fourth with a time of 23.37. That time is 17th best in 2A.
The Mustang girls doubled up in both individual hurdle events as Bird (17.56) was fourth in the 100 hurdles and Baird (1:16.89) finished sixth in the 400 hurdles.
Paige Steenhoek finished third in the 3,000 with a time of 12:00.54. Riley DeVore (2:47.37) was fifth in the 800, Tiffani Koonce (5:55.31) ran to sixth in the 1,500 and Celeste Wagaman (4 feet, 8 inches) took sixth in the high jump.
The PCM boys were top five in two other relays.
The 4x400 relay was fourth in a season-best time of 3:41.83. That team included August Stock, Carson Duinink, Boell and Landon Fenton.
The sprint medley relay team of Kaden Hale, Anderson, Mitchell and Landon Fenton finished fifth in 1:39.95.
The other top-six individual finishes came from Anderson (11.85) in the 100 and Gavin Fenton (1:02.22) in the 400 hurdles. Anderson was fifth and Gavin Fenton placed sixth.
The Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Mustangs will hit the track for the very first event as the girls shuttle hurdle relay team participates in the preliminaries at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Van Winkle runs in the 200 preliminaries at 11 a.m. on Thursday and the boys shuttle hurdle relay team hits the blue oval at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Chipps competes in the 100 hurdles prelims at 10 a.m. on Friday. She is in the 400 hurdle final at 11:40 a.m. on Friday.
The 4x200 relay teams compete at 10:20 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. starting with the boys.
The boys distance medley relay team competes at noon on Friday and the 4x100 relay prelims for both teams are at 12:40 p.m. and 1 p.m. starting with the girls on Friday.
