PCM wrestlers claim Southern Iowa Classic team title

Jan. 29—FAIRFIELD — Three individual championships and 10 top-three finishes led the PCM wrestling team to the team championship at the Southern Iowa Classic on Saturday.

The Mustangs were one of two programs to field a full roster and they scored 202.5 points at the top of the standings.

Burlington also had a full lineup and finished second with 168 points. Fort Madison (165.5), Fairfield (135.5) and Washington (111) also were in the top five and Mount Pleasant (56), Keokuk (51) and Albia (0) completed the eight-team field.

Class 2A No. 10 Tucker Wheeler (138), Donovan Nickelson (182) and Kaden Clark (285) all won individual titles, while Kaliber Fry (106), Zach Richards (120), Remington Fry (126), Jeffrey McDanel (152) and Finn Wilson all finished second. The third-place finishes came from Hewitt Brinegar (145) and Nate Richards (195).

Wheeler, Nickelson and Clark combined to go 11-0 with 10 pins. Wheeler (36-10) was 4-0 with four pins at 138, Nickelson (20-7) won both of his matches by fall at 182 and Clark (30-13) had four pins at 285.

All four of Clark's pins came in the first period and he also won once by medical forfeit.

McDanel (21-17) was 4-1 with four pins at 152, Kaliber Fry finished 3-1 with three pins at 106 and Zach Richards, Remington Fry and Wilson all were 2-1.

Kaliber Fry (23-14) and Zach Richards (24-13) each recorded two first-period falls, Wilson won both of his matches by fall and Remington Fry (32-10) had one pin and a 21-6 technical fall victory. Zach Richards' lone loss came against 2A No. 6 Aaron Boone of Washington.

Brinegar and Nate Richards (25-15) both were 2-2 at their weights. Brinegar (30-16) won twice by fall and Nate Richards got a 2-1 win and a win by pin.

Joel Greiner finished fourth at 220, Wyatt Wheeler placed fifth at 160 and Charlie Sitzmann and Harrison Brinegar were sixth at 113 and 132, respectively.

Wyatt Wheeler finished 2-3 for the day, winning his final two bouts by major decisions. Sitzmann was 1-4 with one pin, Harrison Brinegar claimed a 10-9 win and Greiner finished 0-3.

Mustangs cruise past Grinnell, edged by Pella

GRINNELL — Five Mustangs were 2-0, Nate Richards and Kaliber Fry each registered two pins and the Mustangs split a road triangular on Thursday.

PCM had seven pins in its 54-28 win over Grinnell, but Pella won the final seven bouts in their dual and downed the Mustangs 41-36.

The Mustangs led the Dutch 36-4 before losing the final seven matches.

Against Grinnell, PCM was 7-5 in contested matches and took a pair of forfeits. Nate Richards, Kaliber Fry, Sitzmann, Remington Fry, Tucker Wheeler, Hewitt Brinegar and Wilson all won by pin and Zach Richards and Nickelson took the forfeits.

The Dutch were 8-5 in contested matches against PCM. Sitzmann took a forfeit for the Mustangs and Nate Richards, Kaliber Fry, Zach Richards, Nickelson and Clark all won by pin.

Kaliber Fry's pin against Grinnell came in 54 seconds and Clark's fall against Pella took 35 seconds.

Nate Richards and Kaliber Fry were 2-0 with two pins and Sitzmann, Zach Richards and Nickelson also finished 2-0. Wilson was 1-0 and Clark's loss came against Class 2A No. 7 Gene Blalock of Grinnell.
