PCM wrestling wins, Newton places ninth at Big Red Invitational

Jan. 15—CENTERVILLE — A full lineup and six top-three finishes guided the PCM wrestling team to the championship at the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invitational on Saturday.

The Mustangs were led by Remington Fry's individual championship, and Tucker Wheeler, William Vanderpool and Nate Richards all placed second.

PCM won the tournament with 188 points, while Knoxville (144.5), Centerville (142), Fairfield (136.5) and Clarinda (130) completed the top five.

Newton placed ninth in the 12-team field with 77 points. The Cardinals entered just eight wrestlers and were led by Kaiden Rogers' third-place finish.

Fry (26-6) won the individual title at 126 pounds. He was 5-0 for the day with three pins and two wins by decision. He defeated Newton's Seth Adams 8-5 in their head-to-head matchup. Adams placed fifth in the weight class after going 3-2 with two pins.

Wheeler (29-6) was second at 138 after a 4-1 day. He won twice by pin and once my major decision. He lost 6-4 to Knoxville's Luke Spaur.

Vanderpool placed second at 152 after a 3-2 day. He won three times by fall and lost twice to champion Jax Mosely of Centerville.

Richards (19-10) won four times at 195 and finished second after recording three pins.

PCM's third-place finishes came from Kaliber Fry at 106 and Hewitt Brinegar at 145.

Kaliber Fry (16-8) was 3-2 for the day with a win by pin and two wins by major decision.

Brinegar (23-11) finished 3-2 with three pins. He defeated Newton's Avery White by fall. White finished fourth after a 2-3 day and one pin.

Kaden Clark (285), Griffin Olson (170) and Zach Richards (120) all were fourth at their weights, while Sawyer Bouwkamp (132) and Joel Greiner (220) finished fifth. Donovan Nickelson (182) and Jeffrey McDanel (160) were sixth and Charlie Sitzmann (113) placed eighth.

For Newton, Rogers (13-7) was third at 113 after a 3-1 day. He won twice by fall and defeated Matt Genobana of Centerville, 9-8, in the third-place match.

Wyatt Weter (13-10) placed fourth with a 3-2 day at 182. He defeated Nickelson, 6-4, in their head-to-head matchup. Nickelson (13-5) was 2-3 for the day with two pins.

Lane Rozendaal (152) was fifth in his weight class, while Coleby Revell (220) and Sebastian Sorenson (120) were sixth and Aiden Robson (132) placed seventh.

Zach Richards (15-8) placed fourth at 120 with a 2-3 day and two pins.

Bouwkamp and Robson both had two pins at 132. Bouwkamp won three matches and Robson had two wins.

Olson, McDanel and Clark (17-8) each won one match at their weights, and Greiner was 2-3 with two pins, including a win by fall over Revell.

Rozendaal's fifth-place day featured two wins by pin.
