A Plant City man died in a three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon near Lakeland.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue were dispatched at 4:44 p.m. to a reported crash on Ewell Road, about a quarter-mile west of Old Highway 37. First responders found Thomas Holloway, 49, of Plant City dead in his vehicle, PCSO reported.

The other two drivers — Jose Castro, 53, of Lakeland, and Logan Barrand, 26, of Lakeland — were transported to a local hospital for treatment, the news release said.

According to the preliminary investigation, Holloway was traveling west on Ewell Road in a 2020 Kia Soul when it crossed over the center line and sideswiped a Chevrolet Silverado truck being driven by Castro. The Kia then struck a Hyundai Sonata being driven by Barrand with enough force that the Kia’s engine became detached, PCSO reported.

All three drivers were wearing their seat belts, the release said. During the investigation at the scene, Ewell Road was closed in both directions for about three-and-a-half hours.

The investigation is ongoing, but no charges are anticipated, PCSO said.
