Manhole explosion leaves thousands in Newton without power
A manhole explosion left thousands of Newton residents without power Thursday afternoon.
According to Newton police, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Walnut and Lakewood Streets.

According to Newton police, a couple of witnesses reported seeing flames shooting up from the blown manhole cover. Police say the manhole popped up but didn’t fly high into the air.
Police cordoned off the area with yellow tape and an orange traffic cone was placed near the manhole.
Power was restored at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Around an hour earlier, the MEMA outage map accounted for 6,466 Newton customers affected by the power outage.
Eversource crews are trying to figure out the cause of the explosion but believe it was caused by an electrical issue.
Police say there is no timeframe for when power will be returned.
No one was hurt during the incident.
