Peabody winning filmmaker Bing Liu to return to Rockford later this year

Peabody winner, Academy Award nominated, and Rockford native Bing Liu will return to the city later this year.

Liu will be a featured guest at the 815HORTS film festival.

“I'm excited to return to the city that first nurtured my artistic worldview and get involved in a conversation about the future of film in the Rockford region,” Liu said in a news release.

Liu is best known for directing "Minding the Gap", which was nominated for Best Feature Documentary at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019. The film won a Peabody award the same year.

Recently, Liu's short documentary "What the Hands Do" had its world premiere at the 2023 Camden International Film Festival. He is currently developing multiple fiction and nonfiction projects.

Liu will be participating during Rockford film festival's "5HORT Talk." The talk is an interview series held during the intermission of the festival.

This is the second year of the 815HORTS film festival.

This year, the festival expanded to include educational content, awards for Best 5HORT and Fan Favorite as well as film screenings that include the 2023 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour.

Other guests at this year's festival features Dena Altamore, founder of SoundLight Entertainment; Don Hatton, founder of Dashford Media and Rockford Film Office; and Jerry LaBuy, chair of Rock Valley College Mass Communication and executive director of Mosaic World Film Festival.

Doors open for the festival at 5 p.m. Dec. 2 at the RPL Nordlof Center. Liu is expected to speak at 7:30 p.m. The 5HORT awards will be given out at 9:45 p.m.
