Peacocks flourish in a Pakistani sanctuary

This sacred bird is being saved by locals

Location: Mithi, Pakistan

The Indian Blue Peafowl has faced

drought and deforestation

The Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary protects them

and now they’re having a comeback

DEPUTY CONSERVATOR, WILDLIFE MIRPURKHAS DIVISION, MIR AIJAZ TALPOUR, SAYING:

"We bring tankers full of water from Mithi, and we distribute the water here for these birds. We are trying to return this place to the peafowl's natural habitat so that we can keep them here. This is a very rare species. It is not found anywhere else in the world except here in Sindh. It is especially rare in Tharparkar."

The peafowl population was lowest in 2011

with only about 200,000 survivors

Officials speculate the peacocks have increased five-fold since then

DEPUTY CONSERVATOR, WILDLIFE MIRPURKHAS DIVISION, MIR AIJAZ TALPOUR, SAYING:

“God willing, the numbers will turn out to be in the millions. I am sure we have millions of peafowl here with us already. We are protecting them, and God willing in the coming years, the result will be even better."
