Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been lined up to write the screenplay for an untitled Star Wars movie.

Knight takes over from original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson following the duo's recent departure from the project, according to Variety.

Further details about the top-secret film, which will be directed by Ms Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, are expected to be announced at the Star Wars Celebration in London next month.

While Lindelof and Britt-Gibson are yet to give a reason for their departure, Lindelof recently admitted that writing for such a renowned franchise is an "extremely" difficult feat.

"I will just say that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high," he told Slash Film.

"If [the film] can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That's all I’ll say, because I have the same association with [Star Wars] as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad's lap, 4 years old, May of '77."

Meanwhile, Knight is currently working on the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, which is set to entail a "very specific story" inspired by true events from World War II.

"I've had this in mind for quite a while now, a story with the Peakys during the Second World War and I've picked up three true stories that I'm integrating into the film," he explained last year.

"True, sort of secret and unknown stories about the Second World War, and [I've] involved the Peakys in there."

Knight is also reuniting with Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham for a new Disney+ series titled A Thousand Blows, which will delve into the perilous underworld of illegal boxing in Victorian London.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the entire Skywalker Saga are available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K now, as well as on Disney+.
