Note: The following article contains spoilers for Peaky Blinders' season 5 finale.

Peaky Blinders season 6's plot will introduce Gina Gray's family and more people connected with Oswald Mosley according to the director, Anthony Byrne.

The season 5 finale saw the boldest cliffhanger in the show's history, as Tommy Shelby seemingly lost his mind after being betrayed by a mysterious enemy during Oswald Mosley's rally.

It's been revealed that some scenes were cut from the finale to help hide who exactly was behind the betrayal.

Speaking to BBC Sounds' Obsessed With Peaky Blinders podcast, Anthony, who is returning to direct season 6 teased some details about new characters.

He said: "Gina, and whoever her family are, will make themselves known, Oswald Mosley and some people around him and his world."

Could Gina's family involve casting Julia Roberts as her mother? The actress has been rumoured for a role in Peaky Blinders. And perhaps another rumoured actor, Stephen Graham, could play her father?

Meanwhile, we know from real-life history that Oswald Mosley marries his second wife Diana Guinness in 1933 at the home of Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler was a guest of honour.

Speaking about his work on season 6, Anthony added: "I have read three of the scripts and they're great, I did say it feels like part one of two and that was purely based on the fact that you have this cliffhanger.

"I want to know what happens in the field, I had no idea, I mean I do now. At the time when we were shooting it. Nobody knew, so I wanted to commit to playing it. Cillian didn't know either.

"I checked my email and episode one of season 6 had just arrived and I went 'Oh f**k, do you want to know what happens after what we've just watched?'

"Then I sat on the couch and started reading it and my editor was sitting beside me just going 'Woah' and 'f**k' - and I was like 'Do you know what page I'm on?' and I was like '46'. So I actually read the whole thing out loud. It was so compelling."

Anthony reckons we're probably going to have to wait until early 2021 for the Peaky's next outing. Although, this date hasn't been officially confirmed by the BBC.

He said: "I start later this year and then we shoot next year and I have no idea when it would be out, maybe early 2021, something like that?"

Fans didn't see much of Anya Taylor-Joy's Gina in this season, but Anthony previously told GQ that "there's a lot to be revealed about her next series. She's a player, she's a manipulator. She's part of a wider plan".

Peaky Blinders season 5 is on BBC iPlayer and comes to Netflix on October 4.
