Pedestrian, 14, killed in hit-and-run on Garden State Parkway in Montvale

A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed in a hit-and-run early Thursday on the Garden State Parkway in Montvale, police said.

It happened at about 5:02 a.m., said Trooper Troy McNair of the New Jersey State Police.

According to the preliminary investigation, an unidentified vehicle was traveling south on the Garden State Parkway, with a Chevrolet Tahoe following closely behind. The fatal crash unfolded when the girl entered the pathway of the unknown vehicle at milepost 171.1. The unknown vehicle struck the young pedestrian, and the Chevrolet Tahoe, trailing closely, subsequently hit the victim, McNair said.

The unidentified vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene, continuing south on the parkway without stopping, McNair said. The driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe, realizing they had struck something, contacted Troop “D” Bloomfield station to report the collision.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

No additional information has been released, and the hit-and-run remains under investigation.
