Hit-and-run SUV driver kills 64-year-old pedestrian in Brooklyn: ‘We need justice,’ son says

A hit-and-run driver fatally struck a 64-year-old man on a Brooklyn sidewalk, police said Monday.

The heartless driver has not been caught, but the person’s SUV was found abandoned less than half a mile away, cops said.

Just before the tragedy, victim Ali Alshawesh was leaving his job at a bodega on Avenue L near E. 89 St in Canarsie around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to his son Salim Alshawesh.

He was walking east on the sidewalk near the edge of the roadway on Avenue M when he was struck by a 2014 gray Nissan Pathfinder making a wide turn off Remsen Ave., police said.

The driver then slammed into a parked, unoccupied car before speeding off, doorbell surveillance footage showed.

Medics rushed Ali Alshawesh to Brookdale University Hospital, but he could not be saved. He was just a few blocks from home when he was struck.

“He was a very nice person,” said Salim Alshawesh. “He was a very peaceful person. He left a big, empty space in everyone’s heart.”

The victim immigrated to the United States from Yemen and lived above his brother’s business. He had five children and a wife back in his native country, according to the son.

“Justice — we need justice,” Alshawesh said. “That’s all that matters to me right now.”

A local resident said a crash in the area is “nothing new.”

“We have written to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a stoplight, more stop signs, more crosswalks and nothing has been done,” said the man, 36, who did not want to be named.

“It’s ridiculous you have a school nearby where kids are in and they feel it’s unnecessary to put a light or have more crosswalks,” he added.

The abandoned Pathfinder was found by cops on E. 96th St. near Avenue M. Cops are still searching for the driver.

“We have been talking with the police since yesterday,” said Alshawesh. “We found the car — now we need to find the person.”
