Pedestrian collision closes I-10 near Schuster Avenue west of Downtown El Paso

A pedestrian was struck in a fatal traffic collision late Monday night that shut down Interstate 10 for hours near the Sunset Heights area west of Downtown El Paso.

The collision occurred before 10:30 p.m. on I-10 near Schuster Avenue next to the University of Texas at El Paso.

The westbound lanes of I-10 were closed and traffic was being detoured off the freeway at the Porfirio Diaz Street exit, police said. The freeway was reopened by about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Details on the fatal pedestrian collision were not immediately available as an investigation by the police Special Traffic Investigations Unit was underway.
