Pedestrian dead after crash in Wythe County

WYTHE COUNTY, VA (WVNS) — The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash that killed a pedestrian in Wythe County.

According to a press release from the Virginia State Police, the incident happened in Wythe County at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 on Route 11.

The Virginia State Police stated that a GMC truck pulling a trailer was driving on the 2900 block of Route 11/W. Lee Highway when it hit a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart along the road. The truck could not avoid hitting the pedestrian, and there were no shoulders or sidewalks by the road.

While the driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the pedestrian, who was identified as 66-year-old Worley J. Stafford, of Rural Retreat, Virginia, died at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.
