Pedestrian dies in Route 13 crash in Accomack County: Police

An Accomack County woman died after being hit by a vehicle on Tuesday on Route 13 near Bloxom, Virginia State Police said.

Police said Marlene Marie Trakney, 35, of the 17000 block of Second Street, Nelsonia, was walking in the left travel lane of south Route 13, about 50 yards north of Mason Road, when she was struck by a 2018 Honda Odyssey van.

The van, driven by David Arthur Peterson, 63, of Greenville, North Carolina, was traveling in the southbound lane when it hit Trakney.

The accident happened at about 6:38 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, police said.

Trakney died upon impact from the injuries sustained. It is unknown why Trakney was in the travel lane of an unlit area of Lankford Highway (Route 13).

Peterson did not suffer injuries as a result of the crash.
