Pedestrian hit and killed by car on SR 40 East near Baseline Road east of Ocala

SILVER SPRINGS — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car early Thursday on State Road 40 East near Baseline Road (State Road 35.)

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the man was standing in the left eastbound lane of SR 40 when he was hit by an older model Kia Altima about 2 a.m.

The injured man was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where he later died. The patrol no longer provides names of people involved in vehicle crashes.

Troopers said the victim was 32 and from Cape Coral.

The Kia driver, a man in his 20s from Silver Springs, was on his way to work when the crash occurred, officials said.

FHP officials said the crash site was dark at that hour.

Law enforcement officials said the driver is cooperating with the investigation and voluntarily provided a blood sample, which is standard procedure in crashes involving a death.

In 2021, the total number of fatalities on the county's roadways was 80. So far this year, FHP has recorded 45 traffic deaths. That does not include traffic fatalities within the cities of Ocala, Belleview and Dunnellon.

Thursday's crash is still being investigated.
