Pedestrian hit and killed while walking on Highway 50 in Sacramento, CHP says

A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle while walking on Highway 50 near Sacramento’s College Town neighborhood, temporarily closing eastbound lanes early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The fatal incident was reported shortly after 4:30 a.m. on eastbound Highway 50 near the Howe Avenue exit, the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release.

The pedestrian, a woman, was walking in the fast lane of traffic when she was struck by a Toyota driven by a Sacramento man, according to the news release.

The involved motorist pulled over and called 911, then exited the highway at Watt Avenue and waited for authorities to arrive, CHP officials said. Investigators determined the motorist was driving about 65 mph and saw the pedestrian but was unable to avoid her.

Debris from the crash spread across all five lines of eastbound traffic, authorities said.

All eastbound lanes were shut down before 5 a.m., and Caltrans diverted traffic at the 65th Street exit. All lanes reopened around 7:15 a.m., the CHP said. Caltrans live traffic cameras continued to show congestion in the area as of 7:30 a.m.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered to be factors for the driver or pedestrian, according to the CHP.

The incident is being investigated by the CHP’s South Sacramento office. The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
