Man walking his dog killed in Fircrest after being hit by suspected impaired driver

A man walking his dog in Fircrest on Sunday morning was killed after a driver who police suspect was impaired by drugs or alcohol ran into a parked car that then struck the pedestrian.

The man, who is about 70 years old, died of his injuries Monday, Fircrest Police Chief John Cheesman said.

Police responded about 6:15 a.m. Sunday to the 700 block of Claremont Street, Cheesman said. He said a woman driving a 2007 Dodge Magnum was going east on Claremont when her car hit a parked vehicle, pushing it into the pedestrian.

The collision sent the woman’s car across the street, and the parked car came to a rest in some bushes, Cheesman said.

The man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and was later transported to Tacoma General Hospital.

The driver was injured and transported to the hospital. Her injuries were not life threatening.

Cheesman said the driver’s blood was drawn to be tested for impairing substances.
