Two hit-and-run crashes led to the death of a pedestrian and Illinois State Police searching for the drivers who took off running from the two accident sites early Friday.
Just after midnight authorities were called to Interstate 94 south at 83rd Street for a report of a crash in which a silver Ford hit the rear of a black Hyundai, according to information from state police. The occupants of the Ford took off running.
The 30-year-old Chicago Heights man who was driving the Hyundai moved it to the top of the ramp to 83rd Street to call authorities, state police said.
Soon after, a pedestrian was standing near the abandoned Ford for an unknown reason when a green Subaru approached and hit the 27-year-old man, officials said. Then the Subaru left the road, parked, and all occupants of that vehicle took off on foot, also.
All southbound lanes were closed at 12:10 a.m. as the two crashes were investigated. All lanes reopened at 10 a.m. that day. The fatal crash remains under investigation.
No arrests had been made and investigators were looking for additional information as of Sunday. Anyone who witnessed the crash or was traveling in or around the area and may have information to share is encouraged to contact the state police 847-294-4400.
