Pedestrian killed by hit-skip driver on East Exchange in Akron

The second pedestrian to die in December has been killed on East Exchange Street near the University of Akron.

Police say a 69-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle Thursday evening in Akron.

The man was crossing East Exchange at Spicer Street near InfoCision Stadium when he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Exchange Street. After striking the pedestrian, the vehicle fled the scene.

The victim was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries and died, police said. Police recovered the suspect vehicle, unoccupied, a short time later.

The other fatal crash in Akron took place around 7:40 a.m. Dec. 6 on East Exchange Street a few blocks west, between Sumner Street and Allyn Street.

A 39-year-old man was struck as he was crossing the road. The 42-year-old woman driving the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Alcohol and speed don't appear to be factors in the incident, police said.
