Pedestrian killed on Illinois 29 near Tuxhorn Road on Friday identified

A Springfield man struck by a car on Illinois 29 near Tuxhorn Road just south of Springfield late Friday has been identified.

Gordon Matthews, 69, formerly of Pana, died from multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the accident, said Sangamon County coroner Jim Allmon following an autopsy Monday.

Matthews was walking in the right lane of the roadway heading northwest when he was struck shortly after 10 p.m. by a 2016 Honda CR-V being driven by Sydney E. Dowson, 25, of Auburn.

Dowson was not ticketed, according to the Illinois State Police Trooper Jayme Bufford.

Bufford said there is no overhead lighting at the intersection of Illinois 29 and Tuxhorn.

"We do not know and cannot speculate as to what (Matthews) was doing in the roadway," Bufford said.

Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:32 p.m.

The death remains under investigation by the coroner's office and the state police.
