Garner police identify 21-year-old pedestrian killed in U.S. 401 crash

A pedestrian died Tuesday evening after a collision on U.S. 401 near Kitchen Drive, the Garner Police Department said.

Micah Tashawn Williams, 21, of Raleigh, was struck by a 2012 Nissan van heading south while he walked in the roadway around 7 p.m., police said in a news release.

Wake EMS took Williams to WakeMed hospital on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, where he died.

A preliminary investigation found Williams was crossing the road but was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.

The driver, a 48-year-old Raleigh man who remained on scene and cooperated with police, did not see Williams, according to the preliminary crash report.

Impairment and speed were not believed to be factors in the crash, Garner police said.

“Once the full investigation is concluded, investigators will consult with the district attorney’s office on whether criminal charges will be filed,” Lt. Kevan Anderson said in the release.

Southbound lanes of the highway were closed while police investigated the collision.
