Pedestrian struck by car near Prescott Park in Portsmouth dies. Police investigate.

PORTSMOUTH — A pedestrian struck by a car early Tuesday morning near the entrance to Prescott Park has died, according to city police, who are seeking public assistance with the investigation.

Police closed the intersection near the entrance to Prescott Park after a pedestrian was struck by a car and sustained “serious bodily injuries” early Tuesday morning. The Portsmouth Police Department announced on Tuesday afternoon that the unidentified 53-year-old man hit by the car was pronounced deceased after being transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

The identity of the man killed in the accident was not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.

Portsmouth Deputy Police Chief Michael Maloney said that just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, police received a report of a motor vehicle vs. pedestrian accident, prompting crime scene tape around the area of the landmark city park.

City and New Hampshire State Police responded to the accident, just in front of the turn into Prescott Park, to find the car, its operator and the injured pedestrian, who was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, according to Maloney.

The driver, a 50-year-old woman with no permanent address, was uninjured in the incident and is cooperating with authorities, police said.

There were no charges immediately announced but the investigation is ongoing, Portsmouth police Capt. David Keaveny said.

“We’re continuing to investigate and get statements from any and all involved,” Maloney said.

In a parking space on Daniel Street, a short distance away from the scene of the crash, police blocked off the blue Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme involved in the incident with crime scene tape.

The intersection of Daniel, Marcy and State streets in the area of the crash, adjacent to the turn beneath the Memorial Bridge, was closed off by police for several hours during crash reconstruction efforts. The streets were reopened around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Prescott Park remained open to the public, though the main entrance was blocked off.

Police did not immediately release any suspected or known causes of the collision. The Portsmouth Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The city police department is seeking information and video footage from the public pertaining to the vehicle involved in the deadly collision.
