Pedestrian is struck and injured by a vehicle in Atwater, police say

A pedestrian was taken to the hospital Saturday after they were struck and injured by an SUV in Atwater, according to authorities.

Officers responded about 5:53 p.m. to a report of a pedestrian who had been hit in the 100 block of East Bellevue Road, according to an Atwater Police Department news release.

The unidentified pedestrian was found in the center median with an injured leg. Police said the pedestrian was struck by a Dodge Durango that was going west on East Bellevue Road. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with law enforcement, the release stated.

Riggs Ambulance Service and Atwater Cal Fire personnel treated the pedestrian for what police called a significant but non-life-threatening injury to the leg. The pedestrian was taken to a Modesto-area hospital for treatment, according to the release.

Authorities said alcohol was not a factor.

Atwater police continue to investigate the crash and ask anyone with information to contact the department at 209-357-6384 and ask for Officer Salazar.

Police advise drivers to slow down and to be aware of their surroundings during the holiday season. Officers note that traffic is expected to be heavier than normal in the city’s commercial areas and it may be difficult to see pedestrians walking to and from vehicles.
