Pedestrian struck and killed in Augusta County, police search for suspect

STAUNTON — Virginia State Police said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday night in Augusta County just outside of Staunton, according to a press release.

The motorist who allegedly struck the pedestrian fled the scene, police said.

Troopers were called to Parkersburg Turnpike near Pine Tree Lane shortly before 10 p.m., where a 42-year-old man was struck and killed. Police said the suspect vehicle was headed east on Parkersburg Turnpike.

"The striking vehicle then fled the scene. At this stage of the investigation, the suspect vehicle is believed to have been a maroon or red truck or SUV. The vehicle will have damage to its right front headlight, front turn signal, and/or both," the press release said.

The fatal crash remains under investigation.
