Pedestrian struck and killed by train in Chowchilla, police say

A man has died after being struck by a train in Chowchilla on Monday, according to authorities.

The accident occurred on East Robertson Boulevard between South Front Street and Chowchilla Boulevard at about 6:45 p.m., according to Chowchilla Police Chief Jeff Palmer. Palmer said it is believed the Chowchilla resident was on his way to an appointment at the time of the accident.

“He was late and he tried to beat the train and unfortunately that decision resulted in that fatal collision,” Palmer said.

Authorities said officers located video surveillance from the area at the time of the accident. Palmer said the man was on foot traveling east along East Robertson Boulevard and attempted to run across the tracks when he was struck by a Union Pacific freight train traveling south. It appears the railroad crossing gates, lights and signals had been activated and were working at the time of the accident, according to police.

Chowchilla police have not released the identity of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Palmer said both the railroad company and the train engineer cooperated with authorities. Union Pacific railroad police also responded to the scene.
