Pedestrian struck Sunday by truck on Kansas City highway has died, police say

A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle early Sunday on a highway in the Northland has died, according to Kansas City police.

Officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. to the southbound lanes of Interstate 435 near NE 53rd Street, where the pedestrian was struck, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Investigators believe a car, without lights or flashers on, was parked in a lane on the highway. The driver of a pickup truck heading south was looking at the car when “all of a sudden” a person came into its path, police said.

“He was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him with the front of the truck,” the police department said.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. He died hours later, police said.

The traffic fatality marked the eighth this year in Kansas City compared with three by this time in 2021, police said.
