A 42-year-old man evaded serious injury after he was struck by a freight train at Third and Monroe streets Sunday morning.

Springfield Police officers were summoned to the scene at 3:37 a.m. after receiving a call from Union Pacific train operators that a pedestrian had been hit.

Lt. Joe Phillips of the SPD said officers found the man one block east of the track. He confirmed to the officers that he had been struck by the train.

Phillips said the individual was alert and responsive. He was transported to by ambulance to HSHS St. John's Hospital.

Phillips said the individual was hit by a metal stair railing on the train's engine. The impact with the pedestrian bent the stair railing.

The man received a laceration to his head and injuries to his torso, Phillips said. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Susan Stevens, a spokeswoman for Union Pacific, said operators immediately stopped the train once they realized a pedestrian had been struck.

The freight train was southbound, Stevens said.
