Take a peek inside one Yonkers school for a day of lessons on peace and collaboration

A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. The entire school at Yonkers Montessori Academy, Pre-K through 12th grade, created a giant peace sign on the field behind the school Sept. 21 on the International Day of Peace. The school enrollment is close to 1,300 students for the public Pre-K through 12th grade Montessori school in New York state. The collaborative learning community, rooted in the Montessori philosophy, follows the 5 pillars of the Montessori education, including Learning, Hard Work, Peace, Respect and Community. The school has been creating this human sculpture for over 12 years on the internationally celebrated day of peace. The classrooms are organized into multi-level learning communities where students develop skills for collaboration and leadership.
