Pella's Lauman runs away with 3200 title, Dutch take early lead on day one
May 18—DES MOINES — Day one of the State Track and Field Meet is in the books at the famed Blue Oval at Drake Stadium. The Pella Dutch entered as the favorites for the Class 3A boys title and they were able to begin their quest with a couple of big finishes on Thursday while Oskaloosa and Pella Christian athletes also got their weeks started.
The first highlights of a warmer afternoon was Pella's distance runners. In the 3000 girls race, Marissa Ferebee knew it would be a tough task to keep up with the top distance runner in the state in Ballard's Paityn Noe. Noe took the lead early and was able to nearly lap half the field on her way to the title and a new 3A record time. Meanwhile it was Ferebee holding her own in the chase pack as a group of three girls were led by the Lady Dutch freshman until the final lap where ADM's Geneva Timmerman would pull in front of Ferebee to give her a third place finish with a time of 10:32.26 in her first race at state.
"That was my goal to stay out there as long as possible behind Peyton," Ferebee said. "It was hard and hot but we did our best and I was able to battle at the end with Geneva [Timmerman]. I was just happy with the way I finished."
Following behind her was the 3A boys 3200 where defending Drake Relays champion Chase Lauman entered as the favorite. The other top runners tried to mix up Lauman's pace in the opening couple of laps with the Dutchman dropping to fourth at one point before taking back the lead on the third lap and not looking back. Lauman checked over his shoulder a couple of times but was able to cruise to the finish line and cross for his first individual state title with a time of 9:22.48.
"It's just nice to get my first state championship as an individual," Lauman said. "It was cool to win my first and I was just really happy to see my teammate right behind me. It's been a perfect season so far, I never thought I'd do that good at the Drake Relays, and I didn't even run in the 3200 at state last year, so to win it now is just perfect."
Not far behind Lauman was freshman teammate Canaan Dunham, who ran a very solid race in his own right to finish fifth with a time of 9:32.07 with his teammate ready to greet him at the finish line.
Also finishing close to a state title was Pella's Brandon Fischer in the discus. Fischer hovered around second for most of the event before tossing his best in his last throw of 185-09. That put him under a foot behind the lead before Wahlert's Duke Faley blasted a 195-01 throw to secure the title.
The Dutch were able to double dip in the event with Hanson King also saving his best throw for last with a 162-10 putting him in sixth place.
Pella's other scoring event on the day was a seventh place finish in the 4x800 with Nathan Vander Waal, Trey Van Hauen, Atticus Vos and Canaan Dunham racing to seventh with a time of 8:11.85.
The Dutch had a few preliminary races on Thursday as well with the shuttle hurdle getting through to the finals once again after taking seventh with a time of 1:01.62. CJ Shetterly ran in the 100 prelims but would miss out on the finals by 0.07 seconds and would take ninth with a time of 11.17.
Also competing for the Dutch was Cooper Lautenbach (14th, 51.10) and Colin Kerndt (20th, 52.11) in the 400.
The Pella boys sit in first after day one with 27 points. Solon currently sits in second with 16 points.
The Lady Dutch had themselves a nice day as well as they sit third in the team standings after the first day with 15 points.
Other top finishes included Jacie Trine late on Thursday night taking second in the 400 with a new school-record time of 58.83. Trine was sitting around third or fourth entering the final 200 meters before kicking it into gear and moving up to take runner-up.
"I'll be honest, I definitely didn't have anything left in the tank," Trine said about pushing down the front stretch. "It was all mental that last 50 meters. I was like 'ah, I hate this', but I do love it as soon as you cross that finish line. It's the best thing ever."
Trine also took fourth in the 200 prelim with a time of 25.68 as she will race in that final as well as anchor Pella's sprint medley and 4x400.
"It means a lot," Trine said of breaking the record. "My coaches have always been there for me and they've really helped me through this whole season. I'm definitely not done here, but it's a great way to cap off today."
The Lady Dutch would nab a point in the 4x800 with the quartet of Macy Schroeder, Abby Teagarden, Lizzie Neumann and Marissa Ferebee improving on their 17th seed to take eighth with a time of 9:49.75. Kelsey Tauke would compete in the high jump but would finish tied for 18th after not being able to clear the bar at 4-10.
Oskaloosa had a couple of events compete on Thursday. Maleah Walker looked to qualify for the finals in both of her sprint races but would come up with a 15th place finish at 13.10 in the 100 and another 15th place finish in the 200 at 26.47.
Osky also had a pair of shuttle hurdle relay teams race with the boys squad of Dom Piersel, JT Baker, Waylon Bolibaugh and Tatum Westercamp starting off the day for 3A with an 11th place finish and a time of 1:02.21 to miss out on a spot in the finals by 0.59 seconds.
The team would then bookend the day with the Osky girls wrapping up at around 8 p.m. in their race. The quartet of Sadie Blommers, Lydia Van Veldhuizen, Emmalee Wells-Stout and Hannah Quang ended up taking 15th with their time of 1:10.12.
Pella Christian came away with 10 total points on the day. Leading the way was an impressive showing from a pair of Eagle youngsters. Freshman Bailey Vos went toe-to-toe with a Drake Relays champion in the 400 and ended up with an impressive second place finish and new school-record time of 57.74.
"I was just really excited," Vos said. "I've been shooting for this record all season so to finally get it at my last race of the season in the 400 was great. It's just a lot of fun to have something to look back on and remember about my first run at Drake Stadium."
Vos will also anchor PC's 4x400 and sprint medley over the next couple of days as well as compete in the 800 finals.
Her fellow freshman Meredith Van Wyk secured spots in the 200 (2nd, 25.67) and 100 (7th, 12.83) finals with strong showings in her prelims.
On the boys side, fellow Eagle sprinter Isaac Kacmarynski followed suit by qualifying in the finals in the 200 (3rd, 22.41) and 100 (7th, 11.33). Trevor Veenstra had a solid first throw in the shot put but struggled to find his form and would scratch his next five throws to finish seventh with a throw of 50-04. Kaden Van Wyngarden also ran in the 3200, taking 14th with a time of 10:21.74.
Action will resume at Drake Stadium on Friday with Class 2A/3A getting underway at 2 p.m.
