Negotiations for a COVID-19 stimulus package experienced a bit of whiplash this week on Capitol Hill…
And ultimately, ended right back where it started: nowhere.
White House Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin floated a new proposal in a 30-minute Friday afternoon phone conversation, but an aide to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it lacked a broad plan to contain the pandemic.
Talks - which have stretched on for months - will continue.
Friday’s White House proposal carried a price tag of $1.8 trillion, according to the Wall Street Journal… still 400 billion dollars short of what Democrats have already passed in the House.
The failed deal comes after a tumultuous week...
After President Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he’d told his aides to ‘stop negotiating until after the election'… he said on Friday:“Covid Relief Negotiations are moving along. Go Big!”
And then Trump, speaking on Rush Limbaugh's radio show changed his tune again, saying he wants to see a bigger deal than either Democrats or Republicans are offering.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday said he doubted lawmakers would pass a package before the presidential election.
