Pelosi on Trump blaming her for Jan. 6 attack: ‘There is a sickness here’

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said former President Trump “has always been about projection” in response to Trump blaming her for the Jan. 6 attack in his interview with “Meet the Press” Sunday.

“He knows he’s responsible for that, so he projects it onto others,” Pelosi said during an interview on “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” on MSNBC. “The assault on the Capitol building, the assault on the Constitution, the assault on our democracy, shame on him; However, he always projects.”

The former House Speaker denounced Trump’s assertions that she turned down soldiers on the day of the attack.

“[Sen.] Chuck Schumer [D-N.Y.] and I begged him to send the troops again and again,” Pelosi said. “These Trumpites were attacking the Capitol, fighting the police, threatening my life and the life of the vice president … there is a sickness here, and there has to be an intervention.”

Pelosi said one of the reasons she’s running for another term in the House is because of what she feels is at stake in the upcoming presidential election.

“… that intervention has to be the election, which we have to win, and that’s one of the reasons why I am running again, to fight for our democracy, which is at stake if he is on the ballot.”

Pelosi said just because she is no longer the Speaker of the House or the leader of her caucus that she is not ready to walk away.

“I can’t say now that the glory days aren’t there, I’m leaving,” Pelosi said. “There is no honor that my members could have given me, whether it was Speaker, leader or whip, that matches the thrill I get when I go onto the floor and say ‘I speak for the people of San Francisco.'”
