That has less to do with what Biden has done than with what he has managed to avoid, namely terrifying an already-addled nation with the sense of a West Wing in utter disarray, unwilling to answer simple questions about when the president first learned that he was sick or what the White House Medical Unit is doing to keep others in the building safe. At the moment, Biden is teaching a master class on letting your opponent's candidacy self-destruct,” tweeted David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report, which analyzes congressional races.
The UK, France, and Germany this week pledged to sanction Russia over the August 20 poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin. The sanctions will target "individuals deemed responsible" and "an entity involved in the Novichok program," France and Germany said. It will likely have no effect in Moscow.
A fire spread up a high-rise apartment building by strong winds in a South Korean port city left scores of people with minor injuries, officials said Friday. Footage from the scene in Ulsan showed a huge ball of orange flame soaring up the 33-floor building and shooting through the roof as firefighting crews tried to put out the blaze from below. There were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries.
President Trump continued to hail an experimental monoclonal antibody treatment as a “cure” for COVID-19, telling conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh in a Friday interview that it sped his recovery from the disease and was “better than a vaccine.” “I was not in great shape, but we have a medicine that healed me, that fixed me,” Trump said of the antibody “cocktail” manufactured by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Since being released on Monday from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he was treated for three days after being admitted with a high fever, chills and breathing problems, Trump has often pointed to the antibody therapy he undertook at the hospital as a “cure” for COVID-19.
A Minnesota judge cited safety concerns as he issued new conditions of release for an ex-Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd that would allow him to live in a neighboring state while he awaits trial. Derek Chauvin posted $1 million bond on Wednesday and was allowed to walk free from the maximum security state prison where he had been held for his safety since shortly after his arrest. Floyd died after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd's neck for several minutes even after the handcuffed Black man pleaded for air before his death May 25.
Boris Johnson has warned Emmanuel Macron that Brexit negotiators will need to bridge "significant gaps" within days, as Tory sources suggested the French president's stance on fishing was standing in the way of a deal. In a telephone call on Saturday morning, the Prime Minister warned Mr Macron that "progress must be made" on fishing quotas and the EU's demands for the UK to abide by a "level playing field" of rules, including on industrial subsidies. Lord Frost, Mr Johnson's chief negotiator, is in the middle of a fortnight of intensive talks with his EU counterpart Michel Barnier as they attempt to avoid a no-deal outcome at the end of the transition period on December 31.
A senior executive for Chinese communications giant Huawei Technologies has been denied access to most of the documents her lawyers hoped to use to help prevent her extradition to the United States. Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder and the company's chief financial officer, at Vancouver's airport in late 2018. It says Meng, 48, committed fraud by misleading the HSBC bank about the company's business dealings in Iran.
Eric Trump really spun himself into a confusing web with this one. The first son and campaign surrogate to his father, President Donald Trump, attacked former Vice President Joe Biden in a tweet on Thursday that appeared to refute reality — and which quickly sparked bewilderment online. He spoke after the president said he would no longer participate in a debate against Mr Biden next week, citing the debate commission's announcement that it would change the event to be virtual instead of in-person following his Covid-19 diagnosis.
Japan and Vietnam will allow short-term business travel with each other as they aim to boost their economies following travel curbs to rein in the coronavirus, the Yomiuri daily said on Saturday. The pact, which will take effect by the end of October at the earliest, follows similar steps to ease travel restrictions to Singapore and South Korea, the paper added. The two nations are considering a joint official announcement of the measures on a visit planned for mid-October by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to Vietnam, the paper Yomiuri said, without citing any sources.
One of the Democratic Party's most senior figures has openly criticised the UK's system for approving a Covid-19 vaccine, suggesting that the process for ensuring its safety is not as rigorous as that followed in America. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives - one half of the US Congress - made the unexpected comment during a press conference on Friday. She said that people must be “very careful” about the UK drive to approve a vaccine, suggesting that America's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had a tougher criteria for screening any vaccine than its equivalent in Britain.
China said it dispatched ships and planes to track the U.S. guided-missile destroyer John S. McCain as it passed near Chinese-held islands in the South China Sea. The People's Liberation Army accused the U.S. warship of trespassing into Chinese territorial waters on Friday near the Paracel Islands — called Xisha by China — during the latest freedom of navigation missions by the U.S. Navy aimed at defying China's vast claims in the strategic waterway. Spokesperson for the PLA's Southern Theater Command Col. Zhang Nandong said Beijing demanded the U.S. end such actions, calling them “blatant navigation hegemony and military provocation” that “seriously violated China's sovereignty and security interests, and gravely jeopardized peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
Among their missions was to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer from her vacation home, blow up a bridge, storm the state Capitol and target police, court records show. It was early 2020 when the civil war plot landed on the FBI's radar.
What's it like inside Donald Trump's head? As radio host Rush Limbaugh returned from a break after hurrying the president off air, he called his listeners “thrill seekers.” The marathon interview that at times was more of a conversation appeared, at least in part, an opportunity for the Trump campaign and White House to portray the coronavirus-stricken president as fully recovered or pretty close to 100 per cent.
Malaysia's maritime authorities said on Saturday they had detained 60 Chinese nationals and six Chinese-registered fishing vessels they said were trespassing into the Southeast Asian country's waters. Malaysia reported 89 intrusions by Chinese coastguard and navy ships between 2016 and 2019, amid escalating tensions between the United States and China over Beijing's claims to most of the resource-rich South China Sea, which is also a major trade route. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the fishing vessels and crew were detained in an operation off the coast of the southern state of Johor on Friday.
As Texas flashes signs that November's election could wind up the closest in decades, Republican John Cornyn and Democrat MJ Hegar clashed over the response to the cornavirus pandemic and the confirmation of a Supreme Court justice Friday night in the only scheduled debate of their U.S. Senate race. Cornyn, who has been in the Senate since 2002 and is seeking a fourth term, faces an unusual fight in fast-changing Texas, where shifting suburbs and a booming population have increased the chances of Democrats unseating him. Hegar, an Air Force veteran who narrowly lost a U.S. House race in 2018, is an underdog in a state where Democrats haven't won statewide in 25 years.
As tumultuous as the three months since the reopening have been, however, public health officials and Disney World's unions say there have been no coronavirus outbreaks among workers or guests. So far, Disney's wide-ranging safety measures appear to be working. We have no issues or concerns with the major theme parks at this point,” said Dr. Raul Pino, director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, which includes Disney World.
Kayla Eubanks received an apology and a refund from Southwest Airlines after an employee barred her from boarding a flight to Chicago from New York City for wearing a "lewd, obscene, and offensive" top. Eubanks last week was stopped from boarding the flight at LaGuardia Airport by an employee for wearing a black halter top. "I was told that passengers may look at me in my attire and be offended," 22-year-old Eubanks wrote in a now-viral Twitter thread.
Hong Kong police said on Saturday (October 10) they'd arrested nine people suspected of helping 12 Hong Kong activists who fled the city in August, heading for Taiwan, only to be intercepted by Chinese authorities and held on the mainland. The detainees' plight has grabbed international attention, with human rights groups raising concern as their families said they were denied access to independent lawyers, and aired suspicion that Hong Kong authorities helped in China's arrests.
Hope Hicks, the senior aide whose positive COVID-19 test result led to the president disclosing his own last Friday, showed up to work the day after self-quarantining aboard Air Force One despite experiencing coronavirus symptoms, according to a new Washington Post report. Once she was at the White House the next day, she discovered she had tested positive for the virus and went home, but only told President Donald Trump and a few senior aides about it, infuriating coworkers in close contact with her, according to the Post. Hope Hicks, the White House senior counselor and one of President Donald Trump's most trusted staffers, decided to go back to work at the White House the day after she came down with COVID-19 symptoms and self-quarantined aboard Air Force One, according to the Washington Post.
Debate officials have changed the format of a debate between Lindsey Graham and Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison to instead consist of separate candidate interviews. The change was reportedly prompted by officials after Mr Harrison declined to participate unless the Republican incumbent took a coronavirus test, which he reportedly declined. In the hours leading up to the event, Mr Harrison called on debate moderators and Senator Graham to take Covid-19 tests.
