Penguins acquire rights to D Marino from Oilers

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired the rights to Harvard defenseman John Marino from the Edmonton Oilers for a conditional draft pick on Friday.

Whether the Penguins can sign Marino remains to be seen.

Marino, a sixth-round pick by Edmonton in 2015, is headed into his senior season at Harvard and is currently unsigned.

If the Penguins can sign him or trade his rights, the Oilers will receive the Penguins sixth-round draft pick in 2021.

"John is a mobile defenseman who excels at moving the puck while also playing with an edge to his game," said Penguins GM Jim Rutherford.

"We are excited to acquire him as we continue to add defensive depth to the organization. The next step is to work on getting a contract done with him."

Marino, 22, has seven goals and 35 assists in 101 career games at Harvard. In April, he was named one of three captains for the 2019-20 team.

If Marino doesn't sign with the Penguins, or anywhere else, he'll be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
