Penguins drop puck on NHL season with eight players in the top 25 paid among local pro teams
With the big offseason drama for the Pittsburgh Penguins — the decision to keep the gang together by resigning Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin — now the Pens finally get to drop the puck on their 2022-23 National Hockey League season tonight at home at PPG Paints Arena versus the Arizona Coyotes.
The resigning of Letang and Malkin for the same $8 million salary places the pair at No. 11 in the updated List of Highest-paid Pittsburgh Professional Athletes. The List was published earlier in the year, but has now been updated to include the Steelers and Penguins final rosters for their current seasons.
The top of the List is populated with mostly Steelers that signed new deals with signing bonuses, including T.J. Watt and five other Steelers topping $10 million in salary and bonuses this season. New quarterback Kenny Pickett is 10th on the List at $8.12 million, mostly due to a $7.41 million signing bonus in his rookie contract.
Among the 38 players topping $3 million, 18 are Steelers, 16 are Penguins and four are Pirates. Among the 23 players topping $5 million, 13 were Steelers, seven were Penguins and three are paid by the Pirates.
